I used to do one long run on a Sunday then I couldn't run all week. Did some swimming but my knees were fucked.

My advice would be to start properly training in January, start too early and you'll burnout.

It's plan B for me unfortunately.

35 years old, not much natural fitness just enough competitiveness to avoid getting beaten by my twin brother and younger brother should see me round!

Re: Marathon Training 2016
I like born to run, it's a good book. I liked the audio version too.

I used to do one long run a week and that was it but it sounds like I should be doing two shorter ones in the week. My question is the day I have a long run I really ache and the last thing I can do is go running again so how do you do it?

Re: Marathon Training 2016
My advice to you is to be 21 years old and have natural fitness.

Last year I had to pull out of be marathon with a couple of weeks to go. I gave my place to my young nephew who is not a runner, but reckoned he'd be able to get round without any training.

Little git was right and did it in 4:40

Re: Marathon Training 2016
to be completely honest, I'm secretly aiming for about 3:15 too but I don't want to be disappointed if I finish under 3:30 so that's my first target. Anything under is a bonus!

100% agree. I'm 5'8 and 11 and 1/2 stone. I've still got a good 1/2 a stone of fat that I can lose as I read only this morning that each 1lb could equate to an extra 2m/m if you can lose it. Obviously this is all theory but naturally the lighter you are the easier it should be!

But it's not just weight, it's also not filling your body with shit. I need to sort out my diet so that I fuel myself properly for my running. Dare I say it on here but I'm a vegetarian so I've been reading Scott Jurek's - Eat & Run book, he's a vegan ultrarunner who won the Western States 100 7 times in a row, plus numerous other ultra marathons from 50km up to 165miles!

That's a cracking time. Well done.

My good for age time is 3:05 which is pretty much 7 m/m. I can sustain that for 10 miles at the moment (pb of just under 70m) and I think I could probably do it for 13.1 in my current form but not for a marathon, not this time round anyway.

Will see how the first one goes and might work towards that but I might find I prefer the shorter distances or even possibly an ultra!

Same sort of routine as you. i am doing one hill run, one fartlek run, one steady run and one long run per week.

I have also started insanity and am going to do that for the next couple of months 5 days a week just to lose some extra fat.

All in the diet as well as the training though dont forget...

Good times btw, just did a half marathon in 1 hr 38 with a couple of weeks training. i am aiming for a sub 3hr 15 for the marathon

Don't give up, there is always a solution. Have a look at technique and footwear.

The pro shops will tell you to support your feet with fancy, expensive trainers, but they are possibly doing more damage and causing more injury.

Apparently, the best way to run in terms or speed and injury prevention is minimum cushining and a barefoot style - ie forefoot strike.

I'm not an expert, but I would strongly recommend looking into it.

Don't just go out and buy those vibram things and run in them though, do some research and build up the miles.

I started off reading Born to Run and it planted the seed for barefoot (style) running. I expect there are many books that can help you.

Re: Marathon Training 2016
I started running a few years ago thinking once I get in better shape....but just as I start getting fit I get injured for months, and have to start all over, very frustrating.

Iliotibial band syndrome and piriformas syndrome are the conditions that have caused me much grief and excruciating sciatic pain. Apparently many runners suffer with these, anyone else?

Recovered recently but am seriously considering giving up if I get more of the same, just not worth it, I'm mid 50s so perhaps my body is telling me to stop? Would miss it terribly though if I have to, will take it slowly.

My 70 year old Mum gives her marathon and half-marathon medals to our 2.5 year old daughter.

She uses them as stethoscopes to check us, her teddy bears and the dog.

The cat gets right out of the way.

Just don't turn into a massive FIST!

Like the runners who were on my flight back from NY the other week, wearing their marathon T-Shirts and medals around the airport and on the flight 3 days after the marathon.

Sad cunts!

Re: Marathon Training 2016
I get on the "Fast Good For Age" start, Marston. For a 49 year old like me the time needed is 3:15 for that start and it gets automatic entry to London for 2 years.

The pros go off the Championship start and you need 2:45 to go in with them so I need to find 7 minutes. Won't be happening this year that's for sure so I'll aim to get round and enjoy this year.

Fuck me that's quick mace. How much more do you need to shave off your pb before you get to start with the pros? (If you don't already)

Re: Marathon Training 2016
I'm in the London Marathon

2:52 last year but can't see me beating that this year as i've only ran twice in the last 6 weeks due to illness

Run as many miles as you can and a good 80-85% of them at 60-90 seconds slower than predicted marathon pace to build endurance.

Do the rest as a mixture of Marathon pace practice and 10 mile race pace to improve your lactate threshold.

Pfitzinger and Douglas do some very good marathon plans which are used by lots of runners. I've used their plans for all of my marathons.

Looks like you have good disciplines and pretty decent times at shorter distances. Stick to what your local running club are doing and you should do great.

Oh and gradually build up your long run and weekly mileage by less than 10% a week and that will reduce injury risk.

Just completed my fifteenth marathon last week in Beirut and had a shocker as it happens. Didn't hydrate or fuel very well and had a killer dose of man-flu which wiped me out.

Try and find what drinks and foods work for you on the long training runs well before the big day. Nothing worse than having a stomach like a tumble dryer on race day which despite my fairly extensive experience i have fucked up on occasions.

Well done on finishing, albeit 26 seconds off your target, that's still a good time.

Good luck on breaking 4 next year, certainly doable by the sounds of it.

Re: Marathon Training 2016
I ran the London Marathon back in 2010 and my target was sub 4 hrs and I finished it in 4 hrs and 26 seconds.

Those fucking 26 secs have been like a millstone round my neck for the last 5 years. I got a place this year, but had to defer my entry due to injury, so I am gunning for sub 4 hrs this year, albeit 6 years older!

I should of done sub 4, but got carried away with the crowds early on and burnt out between 15-21 miles.

Your plan looks good, swimming is certainly a great form to mix it up as well.

Good luck
